Thomas Hunter narrowly survives a shooting attempt only to awaken in an alternate universe of green forests, a world to which he subsequently travels every time he goes to sleep.

Publishers Description
An Adrenaline-Laced Epic Where Dreams and Reality Collide.

Fleeing assailants through deserted alleyways, Thomas Hunter narrowly escapes to the roof of a building. Then a silent bullet from the night clips his head . . . and his world goes black.

From the blackness comes an amazing reality of another world where evil is contained. A world where Thomas Hunter is in love with a beautiful woman.

But then he remembers the dream of being chased through an alleyway as he reaches to touch the blood on his head. Where does the dream end and reality begin?

Every time he falls asleep in one world, he awakes in the other. Yet in both, catastrophic disaster awaits him . . . may even be caused by him.

Some say the world hangs in the balance of every choice we make. Now the fate of two worlds hangs in the balance of one man's choices.

Not recommended for adult reading  Nov 12, 2009
I gave this book 150 pages of my time before I put it down, glad that I hadn't purchased the whole series. I enjoy reading fantasy thrillers, and this was so lightweight that I had to assume it was written for the early teen, 12 to 14 year old age group. Such a disappointment, given how prolific a writer Dekker appears to be. Compared to a writer such as Terry Goodkind.... well, enough said. Buy this for your neice or nephew, but don't expect a rich, sophisticated plot if purchasing this book for yourself.
awesome book  Sep 12, 2009
Reading for 2nd time (I never read books twice) in anticipation of reading the recently release Green.
Engaging and Clever!  Aug 15, 2009
When we first meet Thomas Hunter, he is being chased down by loan sharks in present day Denver. Thomas gets away and retreats to the apartment he shares with his sister Kara, who uses her nursing skills to fix his wounds and gives him Demerol to help him sleep. When Thomas falls asleep, he "dreams" he is in another world, not Denver, but one inhabited by humans, and "talking bats". This dream seems as real to him as his life in Denver and as the story unfolds, we find that whenever he goes to sleep in one "world" he awakes to danger in the alternate world. He doesn't know if he is dreaming in one and living in the other, if they are both real, or somehow connected. Throughout the book Dekker allows us to experience Thomas' frustration and desperation to find out the truth

BLACK is simply fascinating; a very suspenseful and unique form of Christian fiction. Readers of all faiths will enjoy the intrigue Dekker presents for his characters in this book, so don't shy away from it if you do not share his faith. Think of it as another Narnia, but with much more suspense, and adult characters taking the leading roles instead of children.

The premise of this story is very cleverly plotted; a unique and suspenseful plot that holds the book together very well. I was mesmerized by how Dekker delicately unravels the story line in each of Thomas' two "worlds". The dialogue was very well written, as was the descriptions of the animal-like characters and their world. As for my dislikes, which are few and unimportant compared to what Idid like, but worthy of mention - I thought that some of the characters, including the protagonist Thomas, was a little "flat". I mean, he was real enough to me, but I seemed to care more about how the bok would end instead of what would happen to him. Does that make sense? I cared more about the mechanics of the plot than the characters. My only other complaint, which prevented me from giving this work 5 starts, is that it is waaaay too long. The basic story line is phenomenal, and one I believe everyone should experience, but more than once I found myself pleading for the author to just "get on with it already" and move the plot along a bit faster.. There was more than enough "overly descriptive" chapters but then again, that's just my opinion and I tend to be impatient when it comes to reading an abundance of descriptive detail.

Having said that, I would gladly pick up RED, the sequel, without hesitation. Dekker really is a genius at developing plot and writes very good dialogue, and I love how he witnesses his faith in his books.

Amazing series!  Jul 20, 2009
The Circle series, by Ted Dekker, is an amazing series filled with action, adventure, romance, and tons of suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat!

The new book, Green, comes out September 2009! [...]

Downright surprising  Mar 10, 2009
I have read one of Ted Dekker's books before this one (Three) and I really did enjoy it. However, I was a little skeptical about starting this series because I thought it would be a little too Sci-Fi for me. I was absolutely wrong. I found that his ideas were surprising and very enjoyable. Since he left out elves, dwarves, and other such magical creatures, I let my gaurd down a little and I'm glad I did. I was rapped up in the story and only a couple of times did I slow my reading because of the very few slower-paced spots in the book.
I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I can't wait to continue the series.
